He was a Consultant to the USAF Surgeon General for five years. Following retirement from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service, he joined the Harvard University faculty as Associate Chief of Ophthalmology and Director of the Eye Plastics and Orbit service at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. While there, Dr. Shore oversaw research on orbital implants, for which he holds two U.S. patents. He trained many medical students, ophthalmology residents, and over 25 U.S. and international fellows during his 43 years of clinical practice. Dr. Shore is the founding partner of TOC Eye and Face, Austin, Texas. Following retirement from clinical practice in the fall of 2019, he joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, Dell Medical School. He developed the curriculum for the new residency program in ophthalmology at Dell Medical School which was approved by the ACGME in April 2021. He retired in 2021. Dr. Shore is a former President of the Massachusetts Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons; former Chairman of the Board of Prevent Blindness Texas Austin branch; former President of The American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; and former Chairman of the Board of the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company where he served on the board for fifteen years.

He served a combat tour in Southeast Asia where he flew 103 combat missions as a forward air controller over Vietnam and Cambodia. He is the recipient of the USAF Meritorious Service Award, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 10 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Vietnam service Medal. He still loves to fly. John and Suzanne dated throughout college and were married upon her graduation from the University of New Hampshire in 1967. Both are from adjacent small towns in the seacoast of New Hampshire where they still maintain a residence. They have two children and two grandchildren. Throughout his professional life, John continued to enjoy his love of flying. He was a partner in several flying groups and eventually owned a few airplanes of his own. He was fortunate to fly with his son who shared his love of flight. As a professional photographer, Michael (son) enjoyed flying to airshow events across the country where they flew with and photographed many of the top airshow pilots in the world. Meanwhile Suzanne pursued her interests in teaching history, serving as a docent in museums, and supporting the Austin Lyric Opera and UT Butler School of Music.
